SHILLONG, Nov 5: The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) on Friday demanded for a special session of the Assembly to repeal the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act (MRGA), 2021.

Submitting a memorandum to the Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh, HITO president Donbok Dkhar said, “We request the State Legislative Assembly through you to arrange a special session in connection with the matter relating to the gaming act, 2021…”

He said people from every nook and corner of the state are looking forward to see the government taking a clear stand on the issue.

Dkhar informed that the Speaker has assured to take a call on the matter.

On October 26, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had informed that an ordinance to repeal the MRGA, 2021 will be passed in the next cabinet meeting to be held very soon.

“In the next cabinet the ordinance will be brought,” Sangma had assured.

The government’s decision to repeal the MRGA, 2021 was following stiff opposition from stakeholders including church leaders and pressure group leaders against the setting up of casinos in the state.

This also came days after the Khasi Jaintia Church Leaders Forum (KJCLF) organized a special prayer meeting against the government’s adamant attitude towards their demand for closure of casino industry and repealing of the MRGA, 2021.
