Shillong, Feb 10: The Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has formally submitted an official letter to Government of Meghalaya confirming their decision to hold ‘unconditional’ peace talks.
Informing this here on Thursday, Meghalaya Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said the HNLC has sent the letter to the office of the Chief Minister along with a copy to the Deputy Chief Minister and the Home Minister.
“As mentioned by the chief minister yesterday (Wednesday) that we’ve already started the process to look for interlocutor and similarly we’re going to follow the next process of informing the Government of India,” said Rymbui.
He added that HNLC have given the same statement as issued in the press release that they are open for peace talks without any pre-conditions.
The home minister said that he was positive that they will be able to work on this matter and ensure that there is peace and tranquility in the state.
Fast tracking appointment of interlocutor
Rymbui further informed that all these developments would be communicated to the Central government. “From the state government side, we will also fast track the appointment of an interlocutor so that the issues could be discussed within the parameters of the Constitution,” he assured.
Terming the HNLC’s decision as a step in the right direction, Rymbui said, “This is a positive development and I not only hope but I am sure we will be able to solve this issue once and for all for the progress and prosperity of the state.”
“This is a fast pace and a good development, we want to fast track it as much as possible. The MDA government is confident and will go the extra mile for the sake of peace and tranquillity in the state,” he asserted.
The Home Minister informed that the state government has already shortlisted some names for appointment as interlocutor to facilitate the peace process with the banned militant outfit.
Meanwhile, sources informed that the state government would take up the matter with the Centre on February 15.
