Shillong, Oct 12: Hubert Paliar, a resident from Mawliehbah, a small hamlet in West Khasi Hills 15 kilometres from Nongstoin, will leave the country on Thursday to represent India in the 55 Kg senior category event of World Arm Wrestling Championship in Turkey.
The championship will start from October 14 to 23.
Paliar, a person with hearing impairment is among 10 other arm wrestlers to compete at the championship. Others include Alan S Marbaniang, Kishore Chettri, Everson Thangkhiew, Angel Merry Mylliem Umlong, Airikymenlang Lyngdoh, Margaret Pathaw, Alexander Lyngdoh, Banshan Terang. Mainbor Khyriem(Refree /Official) and Nick Nonglyer(Refree).
Paliar’s wife, Miriam Thangkhiew while speaking to reporters here, on Wednesday, said that her husband has been focusing on his practice for a month now and he is extremely excited to participate in the championship. Thangkhiew expressed gratitude towards the Chief Minister Office, the Department of Sports, the Dorbar Shnong of Nongkseh and all the well wishers who have been supporting her husband financially.
Paliar was trained as a professional baker and joined a business unit called Home Delights Bakers & Confectioners.
He was interested in the field of sports since his childhood, particularly football and arm wrestling. He participated and won the Meghalaya Arm Wrestling Championship held on May 2015. He recently participated in the 40th National Arm Wrestling Championship held at G.H. Raisoni Polytechnic, Sharadha Park, Nagpur, Maharashtra.
