Shillong, April 3: For the first time in the history of Meghalaya, the State’s rafting team participated in the 15th National Rafting Championship R-4 endorsed by the World Rafting Federation (WRF) which was held in Arunachal Pradesh on the Siang River at Yingkiong (Upper Siang District) and Pasighat (East Siang District) from March 5 – 12, 2022.
The team consisted of Banjop Iawphniaw (Leader) from Shillong, Kobek Mawnai, Gilbert Kharkrang, Pynshngain Kurbah and Robert Dkhar all from Law Brywa Ri Bhoi. All the five are first timers, even though they have experience in Kayaking but they had never paddled a raft until the preparation of this competition. This was a completely new experience for the team on how to paddle on big rivers because their experience was limited to paddling on River Umtrew only.
The team was sponsored by the Meghalayan Age Ltd.
The five members were awarded with a cash amount of Rs. 10,000 each for their participation and to continue training for the game so as to gear up for future competitions.
