Shillong, May 25: The Independent Inquiry Committee has strongly recommended the state government to appoint a full time Chairman cum Managing Director (CMD) of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) and to come up with new systems to look into the procurement aspects.

Sharing few points of the inquiry report, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday told reporters that from the administrative point of view, the committee had emphasized the need to have a full time leadership.

“Therefore, they have submitted that there should be a full time CMD or a full time CEO that should take forward (administration of the MeECL),” he said.

Sangma further revealed that the committee had pointed out in its findings that the procurement policies were very obsolete and old adding, “Therefore, there needs to be a process in which this has to be reviewed and new systems have to come up.”

“The department is examining all these aspects,” he informed.

When asked, the Chief Minister said that the committee had found nothing wrong in the procurement aspects.

“…in terms of other aspects of procurement and all they have not found any wrongs in any of them,” he added.

On March 29, the Independent Inquiry Committee headed by retired Justice RN Mishra had submitted its report into the alleged irregularities in the MeECL.

The report was handed over to the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in New Delhi. The committee was constituted on July 29, last year.
