Jowai, Dec 14: The indefinite strike called by the Jaiñtia Hills Truck Owners Association (JHTOA), which began on December 6 at Takhniang, Tuber, East Jaiñtia, intensified on Tuesday with the members of the Association and volunteers heading to Lumchnong, East Jaiñtia Hills to enforce the strike as products from the Cement Factories were still heading towards Kalain and Silchar, Assam.
The President of the JHTOA, Nidamon Chullet, informed that they came to enforce the strike in Lumchnong after learning that there are many trucks from the the factories travelling towards Kalain and Silchar (Assam) and this shows that the cement companies are against the Association and its demand.
He urged upon the companies to comply with the demands of the JHTOA and also urged the government to intervene into the matter equally in the interest of the local truck owners of the state.
The strike and demand of the JHTOA have been supported by various NGOs likethe JSU, JYF, JSM, EJNC and even the North East Truck Owner Welfare Society from Guwahati, Assam.
It may be mentioned here that the JHTOA had called for an indefinite strike to demand from the Cement Companies to implement the transportation charges as notified by the Government which is Rs. 7 per MT per KM and the other demands include the relocation of the cement Companies’ Godowns to Byrnihat and that preferences for transportation of materials should be given to the truck owners from the state.
