Jirang legislator makes surprise inspection of industrial units at Byrnihat to check on emission levels

Shillong, Feb 15: After series of complaints from the locals over the excessive emission of smoke and industrial waste, resulting in health hazard in the area, Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun made a surprise inspection of all the industries present at Byrnihat in Ri Bhoi District.The engineer from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), ADC Ri Bhoi District– R. Kharbihkhiew, MDC of Jirang Victor Ranee along with the headmen accompanied the MLA in Tuesday’s inspection.

Speaking to reporters, Sohtun said he has written to the in-charge of these industries to follow the procedure of waste management given by the MSPCB.

“I have received series of complaints regarding the smoke and industrial waste emitted by these industries in this area. Therefore, we made an inspection today… the waste from these industries will affect the health. And not only the health of the people but it has affected the rivers nearby” said Sohtun.

“I have spoken with some of the Industry in-charge and I have urged them to reduce the waste and the sound from the industry and I have instructed the Pollution Control Board to monitor the waste emission from these industries,” added Sohtun.

He also stated that this will not be his first and last inspection, he’s taking this issue seriously and follow up on it.

The local people along with the village heads lauded the initiative taken by the MLA as this issue has been a concern for the locals residents of the area with these industries at Byrnihat.
