Joint inspection conducted in Tura to check meat vendors’ compliance with HC order

Tura, October 16: Animal meat market inspection was conducted in Tura on Monday after the order was received from the Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills.The inspection started from Dobasipara and ended in Chasingre, covering all the localities.

A joint inspection was conducted by a group of personnel from District Administration (Executive Magistrate), Animal Husbandry & Veterinary, Tura Municipal Board, Food Safety Officer, Police Department including Central Forces recently.

The areas where the inspection was conducted included Dobasipara, Nakam Bazaar, Kabul Bazaar, Tetengkol, Dermile, Araimile, New Tura, Kasanang area, Walbakgre, Megong Bazaar, Dakopgre, Nazing Bazaar, Ringrey Bazaar, Chandmari, Sampalgre Junction, Chitoktak, Rongkhon, Chasingre Farm area and Chasingre NEHU Gate.

During the inspection several meat vendors were found not maintaining the hygienic way of selling the meat products. Out of all the vendors, only one vendor in Tetengkol area was found using a wire net box to maintain fly-proofing.

Also, the vendors were advised to maintain the orders as directed by the authority based on the order of the High Court of Meghalaya which indicates that no animal meat carcasses would be allowed to be publicly displayed.

Meanwhile, the vendors positively responded to the inspection and asked for some time to make fly-proof meat or fish cabinet.

The inspection was done with the aim of advising and to check whether the meat vendors are complying with the orders issued by the High Court such as, not to display the meat carcasses openly, and maintaining the hygienic condition of the shop.

The joint inspection ended with a proposal by all group members to do surveillance again in the near future.

Earlier, a meeting was organised with meat vendors by the District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Office regarding the issue and several joint inspections were also conducted.
