Justices Susmita Phukan Khaund and Mitali Thakuria Elevated to Permanent Judges of the Gauhati High Court

Guwahati, May 20: The Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has recently recommended to the Centre the names of two additional judges for appointment as permanent judges of the Gauhati High Court. They are Smt. Justice Susmita Phukan Khaund and Smt. Justice Mitali Thakuria.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice BR Gavai are also part of the collegium constituted by the Chief Justice of India in terms of the Resolution dated October 26, 2017.

According to an official resolution, a Committee of two Judges of the Supreme Court constituted by the Chief Justice of India in terms of the Resolution dated October 26, 2017, of the Supreme Court Collegium has assessed the judgments of the above-named Additional Judges. The Committee has reported as under:
“We find that the judgments authored by Smt. Justice Susmita Phukan Khaund and Smt. Justice Mitali Thakuria are well-reasoned, contain an analysis of the facts of the cases and are backed by appropriate case laws. We, therefore, agree with the proposal made by the Collegium of the Gauhati High Court and are of the opinion that both the above named Judges deserve to be considered for appointment as the Permanent Judges.”

It is to be mentioned that Justice Mitali Thakuria, who was born in Guwahati, graduated in 1987 in Science Stream from Handique Girls College, Guwahati. She completed her Masters in Zoology and LLB in the same year, i.e., 1992. After enrolment in the Bar, started practicing mainly in Civil Court in District Judges Court campus. Joined in the Judicial Service in March 1998. Promoted to Grade I in December 2012. Serving as District & Sessions Judge, Kamrup (M) till elevation to Additional Judge, Gauhati High Court on 16.08.2022.

On the other hand, Justice Susmita Phukan Khaund was born and brought up in Namrup. She earned a B.A. (Honors) in Economics from Handique Girls College, Guwahati. She completed her Master’s in Economics from Gauhati University in 1989. She obtained an LL.B degree from Gauhati University (Government Law College) in 1989. Enrolled as an Advocate on 12.03.1991. Joined as a Judicial Officer, Grade-III of Assam Judicial Service on 27.07.1995. Appointed to Grade II of Assam Judicial Service on 29.11.2006 and Grade I on 29.08.2012. Elevated as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on August 16, 2022.
