Shillong, April 7: Concerned over education scenario in Jaintia Hills, the Education Cell of the Khasi Student’s Union (KSU), West Jaintia Hills District, on Thursday called upon the Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui to apprise the latter of the failure of Government Boys Higher Secondary School (HSS), Jowai to properly discharge its duties and objectives due to insufficient manpower (teaching staff) and other facilities.
Speaking to media person here after the meeting with the Education Minister, Tynshain Krem, KSU West Jaintia education secretary, said that the Union has apprised several matters of the school that need government intervention. Government Boys Hr Sec School at Jowai has been functioning for more that 30 – 40 years but has no school library, a standard science lab, proper toilet and lacks a proper playground.
“Since the inception and till date, the school does not have its own Library as a part of learning and gaining knowledge nor does it have a standard Laboratory for Science Stream. Students pursue their experiments in a shabby and congested room; the existing toilet rooms are damage and there is no proper running water… a school without these basic requirements is meaningless,” said the KSU education secretary.
Krem reminded that the Education Minister in his visit to the school in 2020 had promised to help in reconstructing the old school building and the retaining wall which is on the verged of collapse. “The minister has assured us that on availability of funds, the government will surely take up these issues that concerned the well being of the school,” he said.
“Sports are very much part of a student’s curriculum, therefore there is an urgent need of a proper playing court, the school does not have even a proper campus… the principal of the school has filed a proposal letter since January but nothing has been done yet,” he added.
In addition to playground and a proper school building, Krem said the school lacks basic information technology facilities. He informed that only four-five working Computer systems are available and the systems have no proper internet connection.
