Imphal, Dec 23: The Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR) has levelled scathing accusations against the National Commission for Women (NCW), calling it out for “hypocrisy and systemic bias” over its inaction on the plight of Kuki women amid ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur.
KWOHR General Secretary Kimneihoi Lhungdim expressed deep dismay over what she termed as the NCW’s silence on repeated pleas for justice since the violence erupted on May 3, 2023.
“The NCW has failed to address the grave atrocities faced by Kuki women, including sexual violence, murder, and mass displacement, allegedly orchestrated by radical Meitei militias like Arambai Tenggol and Meitei Leepun, with state leaders’ tacit approval,” Lhungdim stated.
Selective Action and Systemic Failures
The organisation lambasted the NCW for acting swiftly on cases in Jiribam while turning a blind eye to widespread and well-documented crimes against Kuki women. “Despite international condemnation, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s acknowledgement of the horrific Phainom case, the NCW remains inactive against state-backed perpetrators,” KWOHR alleged.
The KWOHR further accused Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s administration of orchestrating a campaign of ethnic cleansing, targeting Kuki Christian tribals with the support of armed Meitei militias.
Demands for Justice
The organisation outlined key demands:
Proactive NCW Investigations: Immediate action against perpetrators of sexual violence and forced displacement of Kuki women.
End to State Support for Militias: A crackdown on private armed groups like Arambai Tenggol and Meitei Leepun.
Global Intervention: Active involvement of international bodies like the United Nations and Amnesty International to address what the KWOHR has termed “crimes against humanity.”
Ethnic Neutrality: A renewed commitment from NCW to defend women’s rights across all communities without bias.
Call for Global Attention
The KWOHR has urged international leaders to take a stand against the ethnic violence engulfing Manipur, accusing the Indian government of failing its tribal communities. “Continued silence in the face of systemic atrocities is complicity,” the organisation stated, emphasizing the dire need for immediate action.
“We will not remain silent while Kuki women endure unimaginable suffering,” declared the KWOHR. “Justice and equality must prevail. Our fight for human rights is unwavering.”
