Kyrmen to visit Nongpriang village to take stock of rescue ops to retrieved trapped bodies in landslide

SHILLONG, MAY 31: Minister in-charge Revenue and Disaster Management Kyrmen Shylla will visit Nongpriang village on Saturday to take stock of the ongoing rescue operation for retrieving the bodies of landslide victims.

Speaking to reporters, Shylla informed that a total of five lives have been lost due to massive landslides at Sutnga village and Nongpriang village.

Out of this, three deaths have been confirmed and they have been identified as Ohi Nongtdue of Pohwailong Sutnga, Phisar Nongrum (75) and Lumlang Riahtam (16) from Nongpriang village.

The bodies of Kynmaw Syngai (70) and Benti Riahtam (60) from Nongpriang village are yet to be recovered, he said.

“Therefore, we are planning to go tomorrow to visit the site at Nongpriang. We will try to find ways and means to support the families and also to handover the cheques of Rs 4 lakh to each of the next of kin of the four victims,” Shylla informed while expressing his solidarity and condolences to the bereaved families.

Giving a brief report about the damages caused by heavy rainfall till 1pm of Friday, the minister informed that the number of villages affected in East Khasi Hills is 67, East Jaintia Hills – 45, Ri Bhoi – 19, Eastern West Khasi Hills – 23, South West Khasi Hills – 29, South West Garo Hills – 21, West Garo Hills – 139 and East Garo Hills 92, North Garo Hills – 105, West Khasi Hills – 11, West Jaintia Hills – 7.

He said for South Garo Hills, the matter is under assessment.

“We already directed the deputy commissioner of South Garo Hills to send us the information and they will try to speed up.”

Houses damaged in EKH is 54, EJH – 46, Ri Bhoi – 18, EWKH – 25, SWKH- 266, SWGH – 58, WGH – 368, EGH – 341, NGH – 434, WKH – 12, WJH- 1, SGH – under assessment

41 infrastructures were damaged in EKH, 40 – EJH, Ri Bhoi – 2, EWKH – 18, SWKH – 25, SWGH – 2, WGH – 34, EGH – 16, NGH – 9, WKH – 1, WJH – 3.
