Shillong, Oct 7: The search and rescue operation in Atisia Songmong village in South Garo Hills has come to close after the final body was retrieved from the mud and rubble of the landslide on Monday morning.
The last of the body to be pulled out of the mud was of 60-year-old Silje R Marak, the matriarch of the family, after almost 3 days of efforts.
A family of seven members got buried by a massive landslide since Friday morning. The family was inside their house when a section of the hill behind their house came crashing down on them on Friday morning due to the heavy rainfall, leaving them no chance to escape. The entire house got buried in tonnes of soil from the hill.
6 of the 7 bodies buried in the landslide were recovered on Sunday afternoon.
After intense operation involving over 80 people, with the combined efforts of NDRF, SDRF, Meghalaya Police, BSF and locals for over 3 days, the bodies have been finally retrieved.
On Sunday, the 6 retrieved bodies had also been laid to rest in a plot of land behind their house, after a prayer and funeral service by local church elders and villagers.
17 people have lost their lives in the torrential rains across the Garo Hills in the last 4 days.
