Lockdown extended in East Khasi Hills till May 31

Shillong, May 18: Despite the total lockdown with partial movement taking place in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills District, the COVID-19 cases still seems to increase day-by-day. The government has once again decided to impose total lockdown starting May 19, from 8 pm till May 31, 5 am.

What can be seen as the highest record till date in the second wave of COVID-19, 906 active cases was recorded on Tuesday.

Out of the 906, 574 are in East Khasi Hills District. The deaths recorded in the last 24-hours was 19, out of which 17 deaths were reported from East Khasi Hills, 1 from North Garo Hills and Ri-Bhoi District.

The number of recovered cases recorded for the day was 470. Till date the total active cases stands at 5,332, out of which the highest are 3,076 is in East Khasi Hills and 674 in Ri-Bhoi.

Meghalaya deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday informed that following the rise of active cases which is increasing proves that the situation is very grim especially in East Khasi Hills.

He said that this time it will mean that everything will remain shut. Few emergency and essential services for the people of East Khasi Hills, will be worked out by the DC to make sure that essential commodities reaches to all the respective household in the entire District of East Khasi Hills.

The government has also decided that in other Districts it has authorised respective DCs to take appropriate decision if need be, in line with the decision the govt has taken today for East Khasi Hills District.

Tynsong added that during this total lockdown in East Khasi Hills the govt has entrusted DC to work out all details and also work with Superintendent of Police, to ensure that imposition of total lockdown in the District should be followed effectively.

Concerning the vaccination drive, as already fixed by health department it will continue. Vaccination drive during the total lockdown will go on.

The government has urged all citizens of East Khasi Hills as well the residents of Meghalaya to kindly adhere to the regulations issued by the government and also the District Administration in the respective Districts.

“Would request all citizens don’t take this matter lightly take this issue seriously. Don’t ignore the advices and notifications issued by the government. During the total lockdown we will not allow movement outside or inside East Khasi Hills District, except those on medical and emergency services,” informed Tynsong.

During this 10 day total lockdown, the government aims to flatten the curve of the cases. The government also assured the citizens that the state has ample stock, unlike last year.

Concerning establishing corona care centers the government has authorised health department to issue detailed write-up a f plan on how to setup such isolation centers in the community level.

Tynsong said, “We would urge all concerned villagers, community, traditional heads, NGOs all concerned stakeholders please join hands with the Govt. Share the responsibility with the govt for having such isolation centers in the community level.”

The government had imposed total lockdown since May 5, 2021. Weekend lockdown was also imposed in the different districts of the state.
