Loudspeakers are not integral part of religion…: Himanta Sarma on loudspeaker debate

Must read

Guwahati, April 19: A political debate over loudspeakers in religious places is going on all over the country. Giving his opinion on the issue, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma felt that loudspeakers are not an integral part of any religion and, if complains were made about loudspeakers, a secular state should shut them.

Sarma said, “Our civilizational value has been under attack for quite some time. So if there’s a genuine demand around exams (to not play loudspeakers), don’t play it… in a secular state, it’s a duty to shut anything irritant to students/other communities.”

Once again, Sarma also reiterated his demand for banning the PFI after arrests of over a dozen people from Assam in the past one month for having links with Bangladesh based terror groups, patronised by Al Queda In Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).

“There’s an integrated action amongst states against jihadis. We got inputs from Central agencies regarding the presence of jihadi elements and have acted upon that and a probe is underway. I’m confident more people will come to light with some nexus with jihadis. We’re looking parallelly to whether PFI & CFI are linked to fundamentalists and jihadis. I cannot confirm, but we have already requested the Centre to put a ban on PFI & CFI for their fundamentalist activity,” Sarma further said.
