Mahendraganj MLA Sanjay Sangma hails upcoming new Border Land Port

Tura, July 18: Mahendraganj MLA Sanjay Sangma is elated as the proposed land port is set to transform his constituency, fostering business and trade in this remote India-Bangladesh border area.

Located in South West Garo Hills, Mahendraganj is about 90 km from Tura and shares a border with Bangladesh. The survey for land identification was completed in June, and formalities are being finalized to commence the construction of the land port.

Bangladesh has already completed its land port on the Mahendraganj border. Under Sanjay Sangma’s leadership, the community has united to facilitate the government for land acquisition, eagerly awaiting the land port’s completion.

Renowned for their entrepreneurial spirit, Mahendraganj residents are optimistic about the landport’s potential. “This land port will foster trade ties between India and Bangladesh, transforming the lives of our people,” Sangma said in an interview with Hub News. “Our government has been very cooperative, and we appreciate their support in realizing our long-cherished dream.”

Local trader Motiur Rahman echoed this sentiment: “We fully support our MLA Sanjay Sangma for his efforts in engaging with the government to ensure the land port sees the light of day.”

Retired teacher Abdul Latif highlighted the impact on local youth: “Our educated youth lack job opportunities due to the state’s reservation policy. The land port will enable them to start businesses and entrepreneurial ventures, providing sustainable incomes.”

Currently, Meghalaya has one land port in Dawki, 84 km from Shillong, connected by NH-206 and Asian Highway-1.

MLA Sanjay Sangma has also met with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, submitting a proposal for the immediate construction of a road to the Zero point in Mahendraganj to facilitate goods transportation.

In addition to Mahendraganj, three other land ports are being developed in Meghalaya: Bholaganj in East Khasi Hills, Bagli in South West Khasi Hills, and Dalu in West Garo Hills.
