Scooty later recovered from accused house
Tura, Jan 31 : In a bizarre case of vehicle theft, one 23-year old man stole a motorcycle from a TVS showroom in New Tura, on the pretext of taking the vehicle for a trial run before buying.
It was informed that the accused, Sengdobirth T. Sangma, arrived at the showroom around 12:00 PM and requested a test ride of a TVS Ntorq 125. When asked for identification, he instead handed over a bag, claiming it contained all necessary documents and could be kept until his return. Trusting his word, the showroom manager allowed him to take the scooty. However, after half an hour, when he failed to return, the staff checked the bag and found it completely empty.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday noon.

The showroom manager realising that they have been deceived immediately alerted the police and lodged an FIR at the Araimile Outpost in New Tura.
The CCTV footage from the showroom helped identify the suspect, and the visuals quickly went viral on social media. Acting on this information, police tracked him down to Migre village near Asanang, under Rongram Police Station.
At around 9:30 PM, a team of five showroom staff and two police personnel raided Sangma house and successfully recovered the stolen scooty.
Shockingly, the accused had fixed the scooty with an Assam number plate. He was arrested on the spot, and the scooty was brought back to the Araimile Outpost.
Speaking to Hub News, TVS showroom manager Mokhash Hajong expressed his disbelief over the incident. “This is our first experience of such a case. We have always trusted customers in good faith, and nothing like this has ever happened before. The accused used to visit our showroom for servicing his bike, so this was completely unexpected. We will be much more careful in the future,” he said.
Following the incident, other vehicle showrooms in Tura have also pledged to be more vigilant, as such thefts have never been reported in the region before.
Interestingly, the theft triggered a special naka checking operation by the police near Tura Police Station. During the surprise inspection, authorities seized more than 10 stolen motorcycles.
Tura Traffic SP, Feroz Rehman, told Hub News, “After receiving information about the scooty theft, we conducted a surprise checking operation and several stolen bikes were seized. More such checks will be carried out in the future to curb vehicle thefts in the area.”
