Must read

Imphal, Oct 23: The Churachandpur district administration imposed an indefinite curfew in the Tuibong sub-division on Wednesday after protests erupted over allegations of molestation.

The unrest followed accusations against a non-local trader, who allegedly attempted to molest a tribal woman, sparking widespread anger among the locals.

In response, various local organizations led demonstrations, with volunteers blocking roads and setting logs ablaze in the Tuibong bazaar to demand justice for the victim. A 12-hour shutdown was observed in the area, during which all shops and business establishments remained closed until 5 PM.

Churachandpur District Magistrate, Dharun Kumar S., issued the curfew order after receiving reports from the Superintendent of Police indicating a significant threat to public peace. The curfew was deemed necessary to prevent further escalation of the situation and maintain law and order in the region.

In anticipation of continued unrest, police have deployed a large contingent of personnel to ensure the situation remains under control. The district administration has yet to announce when the curfew might be lifted.
