Shillong, Aug 17: Civil organisations from Mawlai locality in Shillong on Tuesday met at Mawdatbaki Indoor Stadium to discuss on the prevailing law and order situation and has decided not to accept the ‘Peace Committee’ constituted by the State Government.

Mawlai locality is in news for the violence that erupted on August 15 following the killing of Ex-HNLC leader Cherishterfield Thangkhiew, who was killed during a police raid on August 13.

General Secretary of Seng Samla Mawlai Pyllun, Samran Syiem said, “We want justice to be served for Bah Cherishterfield who was killed on August 13. We want immediate suspension of those officials involved in that raid-turned-encounter.”

Syiem has asked the Government to understand the sentiments of the people of Mawlai.

“The Government’s decision to shut down internet and imposing curfew was not required since it has been a hurdle for the citizens. They can’t treat Meghalaya like Kashmir but shutting down the internet and imposing curfew as soon as there is a law and order situation,” Syiem added.

The organisation has asked the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills to empower the local heads to monitor the situation in the locality. “As of now they have asked not to employ any police force in Mawlai area since they are yet to come to terms with the killing of Bah Cherish T”, Syiem said.

Mawlai-Iewrynghep Headman H War urged the youths, who may have done things in the heat of the moment to return the weapons.

“We urge them to come forward and submit the weapons or even throw it somewhere, just write and mention where the weapons are,” said H War.
