Tura, Sept 19: A disturbing case of medical negligence has surfaced from a remote corner of Garo Hills, where a surgeon is accused of carelessly leaving a bandage inside the abdomen of a patient during surgery. A formal complaint has been lodged by an organisation to take action against the surgeon, however, the patient had to bear the agonizing pain and trauma for months, and undergo a corrective surgery to rectify the initial mistake.
The incident allegedly happened on January 29, this year. The patient identified as Mensila N Marak, a resident of Lower Nengsa in North Garo Hills, was admitted to Jengjal Subdivisional Hospital for a caesarean section.
“During the procedure, it has come to light that the surgeon Suzie Paul Francis carelessly left a bandage inside Mrs. Marak’s abdomen. This oversight has not only caused her significant pain and discomfort, but also posed serious health concerns,” A’chik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) alleged on Tuesday.
ASPF on Tuesday lodged a formal complaint before Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh and demanded action against the surgeon.
“We request an immediate investigation into this matter to determine the extent of negligence and to hold Dr. Suzie Paul Francis accountable for her actions. It is imperative that such cases of medical malpractice are addressed promptly to prevent similar incidents in the future,” ASPF said in its complaint to the Health Minister.
Meanwhile, the Medical Director of Jengjal Sub-division hospital, in a letter dated 6th June, 2024, took responsibility of paying the expenses incurred in the surgery, including expenses for blood and other expenses, for Mensila Marak’s surgery.
