Rising cases of infection and deaths occurring daily
Shillong, April 28: A ten-day containment period has been announced for Shillong, Tura and Jowai towns by the Meghalaya government, which takes effect from the morning of May 1st to 10th May, to try and contain the Covid-19 coronavirus infection which is spreading with a pace never witnessed before.

The containment period will take effect from 5 AM of May 1st and end on the morning of the 10th.
The government decided to impose the three major towns into containment zones after holding a cabinet meeting chaired by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma at the Secretariat on Wednesday morning.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Health Minister A L Hek and top state bureaucrats.
During the meeting which included video conferencing with deputy commissioners of the districts, inputs and assessments of experts and the health department were taken into consideration after due consultation with the district heads.
Alarm bells have been ringing for the past two weeks as the number of returnees to the state doubled and with it the infection rate, with many arrivals found positive with the virus.
The government has empowered all Deputy Commissioners of districts across the State to impose necessary restrictions to ensure guidelines are followed to break the infection chain of the virus.
However, unlike previous lockdowns which were near total, this time various activities will be allowed including opening of essential items shops, particularly food and medicine stalls,hardware, electrical and repairing shops.
Given that there will be no restriction on opening of essential stores, the government has urged the public to desist from any panic buying. To ensure adequate stock of essential items, the government has permitted the movement of transport carrying goods during the lockdown period.
In regards to medical emergencies, movement without passes shall be permitted.
Though ongoing examinations will continue, all educational institutions in Shillong, Jowai and Tura will remain closed during the 10 day lockdown.
Subject to obtaining permission, vehicular movement which includes private commuters shall be permitted solely for emergency purposes. The inter district movement to and from the containment area will be regulated.
The following are the containment measures for Shillong agglomeration, Jowai and Tura-
– All political, public, religious gathering has been restricted. Weddings and funerals will be allowed but subjected to DCs permission.
– All sporting activities will not be allowed
– All educational institutions shall remain closed from May 1- May 10
– All Pvt offices will be shut except those providing essential services
– Non-essential govt institutions are closed down and can work from home
-All other non-essential movement is stopped. Any other movement like emergencies are allowed on the issuance of passes from concerned DCs. Those violating will be subjected to penalty
– Public vehicular movement has been reduced to ¼ seating capacity. The DCs and Transport department will have to work out.
-Public transport will be allowed for healthcare and emergency services, students and teachers staff
