Meghalaya DGP applies for leave amidst judicial inquiry into Cherishterfield Thangkhiew encounter

Must read

Shillong, Sept 7: Meghalaya Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Tuesday informed that the Meghalaya‘s Director General of Police (DGP), R Chandranathan has applied for leave. However, the Minister is yet to receive the file and doesn’t have much details about the leave duration.

The Home Minister also mentioned that the government has constituted a judicial inquiry to look into the circumstances which led to the incident of August 13, 2021. “It depends on the committee and it is premature to comment on it since it is an independent body,” said Rymbui.

The DGP’S application for leave has come at a time when an inquiry is being carried out on the killing of ex-HNLC leader Cherishterfield Thangkhiew. This has raised eyebrows about the timing of his leave and has even raised questions if the government will approve it or not.

In the absence of the DGP, the senior most police officer will take charge as acting DGP.
