Tura, Jan 16: Exciting races at Pa Togan Nengminja athletic stadium in Tura took place on the first day of the track and field events with the first medals being given out for long distance and sprint, among others.
The high profile 100 meters sprint was the highlight of the day’s events at the stadium. In the Men’s 100-meters run, Renaldi Dhar of West Jaintia Hills clinched the medal followed close behind by Gracewin Ch Marak of South West Garo Hills district, the difference in timing being a mere 0.2 seconds. Renaldi Dhar clocked 11.5 seconds, while Gracewin Ch Marak clocked 11.6 seconds.
In the women’s 100 meters event, Shillong’s Angelina Jackson representing East Khasi Hills swept across comfortably over Saviinity Jyndiang of Nongstoin West Khasi Hills. Angelina clocked 13.6 seconds against Saviinity’s 14.2 seconds.
The Men’s 1500 meters event was entirely between Ri Bhoi, West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, and West Khasi Hills. Skhemlang Suba of Ri Bhoi won the race by clocking 4:04:7 seconds. In the Women’s 1500 meters event, Glorify Kurbah of Shillong, representing East Khasi Hills, won the race with a time of 5:04:1 seconds.
The High Jump Finals was a mixed bag with Garo Hills athletes from Williamnagar and North Garo Hills giving a tough challenge to their competitors from Ri Bhoi who were the champions in both men and women events. Ri Bhoi’s Primus Ronghi and Rinalis Ingti won the men’s and women’s event, respectively.
