Shillong, Mar 8: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday announced the state government’s decision to scrap the contract with the KPC Group for construction of the Shillong Medical College as the company hasn’t started the work even after several years.
It may be mentioned here that the foundation stone for the construction of the medical college was earlier laid at the premises of the Reid Chest TB hospital in the city. It was also decided to shift the TB hospital to its new building at Umsawli to pave way for the project. The state government had inked an MoU with the KPC group for setting up a 500-bedded hospital-cum-medical college in the state’s capital at an estimated cost of over Rs 300 crore.
“The government has decided to scrap (the contract) and move forward,” Sangma told reporters at the sidelines of the celebrations of completion of four years of MDA government, while adding that KPC group despite entering into an agreement with the government to construct the college, has not started the work till date.
The Chief Minister also expressed hope that the government will be able to move faster with a new proposal for the Shillong Medical College.
He, however, assured that the Tura Medical College is on right track.
