Shillong, May 19: Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association along with TUR celebrated the proclamation of the High Court wherein the Meghalaya government has submitted that it will repeal the state act and implement the Central Act (Street Vending).
Thma U Rangli-Juki (TUR) leader, Angela Rangad said that this is a victory for the people of this association.
She said that six years ago this association came about because of discrimination and oppression against this working class. “Since 2015 there was rampant illegal eviction of the hawkers,” she said.
She added that it was then, when they were busy in getting together how to go about while forming the association, that the government illegally brought in a State Law when there was already a Central law on hawking.
The Association had then challenged the Meghalaya Law because it had clauses which disempowered the hawkers.
“We kept pushing for this law and today finally we celebrate because yesterday in the Meghalaya High CCourt, the Advocate General submitted to the High Court that the government will repeal the state act,” said Rangad.
She added that this is a big victory for the hawkers and citizens of the state.
