Meghalaya HC defers hearing on Harijan Colony relocation issue to Feb 2022

Shillong, Dec 1: The Meghalaya High Court on Tuesday deferred hearing on the issue related to the relocation of Harijan Colony from Them Iew Mawlong to February next year.

The order was passed by the Division Bench after the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) had sought adjournment during the hearing held here.

“Since the respondent seeks an adjournment, let the matter appear a week after the vacation. List this matter on February 8, 2022,” the bench said.

It may be mentioned here that the state government had taken over the land at Them Iew Mawlong on October 29, after payment of Rs 2 crore as premium to the Syiem of Hima Mylliem.

The taking over of the land measuring 12,444.13 sqm was as per lease deed dated March 31, this year.

The tripartite lease deed was signed between the government of Meghalaya, the Syiem of Mylliem and Shillong Municipal Board.

This was also after the state government had decided to implement the recommendations made by the High Level Committee (HLC), which submitted its report on September 28.

The HPC, however, had rejected the HLC report for relocation of the Sweeper’s Colony from Them Iew Mawlong as it vowed to stop all “illegal acts” of the government.
