Shillong, Feb 16: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly paid tribute to the late former Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, SD Khongwir, and former Rongjeng MLA Nihimson R Marak during the first day of the Budget Session on Friday.
Participating in the obituary reference, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma recalled the immense contribution Khongwir made to the state, noting his 55-year tenure as the Headman of Mawlai Nonglum. Khongwir served as a five-time MLA and held various positions in society and organizations.
He was the state’s first Deputy Chief Minister from 1978 to 1979 and again from 1979 to 1983. Khongwir also served in the Ministry of Finance in Delhi and later became an Assistant Revenue Officer in the Autonomous District Council.
“He has contributed immensely, apart from politics he was a person who was very much connected to the community and society. He served as the headman of Mawlai Nonglum for 55 years. This reflected his commitment to the people and his desire to serve the society in whatever capacity he could. This is a true quality of great leader and it’s a great loss to the state. I was fortunate to meet him a few months before he passed away,” said Sangma.
Khongwir passed away in November 2023.
