Shillong, May 6: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday informed that close to 100 students have been evacuated from Manipur and safely brought back to state.
He also assured that Meghalaya would bring back all its remaining students within 48 – 72 hours.
“Close to 100 have already come in… We have got large number of students, more than compared to others state of the north east. So the process is taking bit more time,” he told reporters at the sidelines of the programme for merger of PDF MLAs with NPP on Saturday.
He said the government has been able to book seats for almost all of its citizens stranded in Manipur. However, around seats for 5-10 couldn’t be confirm, but he assured to get the same confirmed in next 48-72 hours.
“We should see that in next 42-72 hours we should be able to bring back all our students,” he affirmed.
Government of Meghalaya began the evacuation of its citizens, mostly students, from the ethnic violence hit Manipur on Friday. 66 students of the state, studying in different institutions in Manipur’s capital city Imphal, were brought back safely by flight on Friday night.
State government has arranged special flights and buses to bring back its citizens from Manipur.
A press statement from government on Friday afternoon stated that in addition to the those being evacuated by flight, at least 60 students were being brought back to state through special buses.
