Shillong, Feb 27: Elections to 59 seats of the 60-seat Meghalaya Legislative Assembly concluded on Monday evening, with a voter turnout at 73.81 percent across the State. However, this average is for polling completed till 5 PM.
The data for some polling stations in remote locations was not available; this number is expected to go up when all the data is gathered either by later tonight or by Tuesday.
Meghalaya had polled 86.65 percent in 2018 Meghalaya Assembly elections.
From the polling data available till 5 PM, Mairang constituency had recorded the highest voter turnout with 90.4 percent, whereas South Tura constituency, the constituency of Chief Minister and NPP Chief Conrad k Sangma, had polled the lowest at 52.1 percent.
It may be mentioned here that the polling was not held in Sohiong Assembly Constituency in East Khasi Hills district following the death of United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate H. Donkupar Roy Lyngdoh, who died of cardiac arrest on February 20. The election commission is yet to announce the rescheduled date for polling in the constituency.
The election commission had set the polling hours from 7 am to 4 pm on Monday for all the 12 districts in the state, however, polling went on at many polling stations late into the evening.
A total of 369 candidates, including 36 women, are contesting the 2023 Meghalaya Assembly elections. Around 21.75 lakh electorate including 10.92 lakh women were eligible to exercise their franchise in the elections.
