Mizoram Assembly Polls: Mizoram CM Zoramthanga says MNF will retain power in state

Aizawl, Nov 7: Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga on Tuesday expressed confidence that Mizo National Front (MNF) party will retain power in the state.

Speaking to reporters, Zoramthanga said, “Going by the political atmosphere today on the voting day, I am sure that the MNF will retain power in Mizoram.”

“We (MNF) should be able to form government in Mizoram comfortably,” he added.

In order to form the government, 21 seats are needed.

“We hope that we will be able to get more than that, maybe 25 or more. I believe that we will have a comfortable majority,” he said.

Zoramthanga is contesting the Mizoram assembly elections from Aizawl East-I constituency.

It may be mentioned here that Zoramthanga cast his vote on a second attempt after he failed to do so in his first attempt due to EVM malfunction.

The state had recorded a turnout of 52.69 per cent of voters till 1 p.m. on Tuesday, according to data provided by the ECI.

The voting for the 40-seat Mizoram Assembly will decide the fate of 174 candidates in the state.

According to the Chief Electoral Officer’s office, there were over 8.5 lakh eligible voters for Tuesday’s polls.
