Kohima, June 27: For the first time in two decades, civic polls were held across three municipalities and 22 town councils of Nagaland with over 80 percent turnout.
Polling started at 7:30 am this morning and continued till 4 PM. The urban body polls in Nagaland are even more crucial this year since it it’s the first time it is being held with 33 percent women reservation.
Nagaland State Election Commissioner T. John Longkumar said, “It was a good election and an overall a peaceful election process. Though the exact final figures are not available yet, it is roughly above 80 percent”.
“We had taken all necessary measures to conduct the polls in all areas of the state. That situation is different. The NGOs decided they would abstain from voting. Meanwhile, individuals filed nominations – 79 of them in fact. But all of them withdrew on the last day of withdrawal,” Longkumar stated.
Polling was not held at six districts of the state, in the Eastern Nagaland area, where Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO), an apex body of seven Naga tribal communities living in those districts, announced boycott of the civic body polls and said nobody from the region would participate in the elections.
As per the state election commission 2.23 lakh voters including 1,13,521 women were eligible for the urban polls in which 523 candidates have entered the fray from 11 political parties.
The last civic elections in the state were held in 2004.
