Nagaland Gears Up for Long-Awaited Civic Polls with Historic 33% Women Reservation

Must read

Kohima, June 13: With the much-anticipated urban local body (ULB) elections in Nagaland just around the corner, political parties have kicked their campaign efforts into high gear. It is after 20 years that the elections to ULBs are going to take place in the state. It is also historic as this would be the first-ever municipal elections in the state to be held with 33% reservation for women.

According to the State Election Commission, 669 candidates, including a remarkable 238 women, have filed their nominations for the upcoming polls. Nomination papers will be scrutinized on Thursday, and candidatures can be withdrawn until June 20.

The announcement of these elections comes after the intervention of the Supreme Court, as the last municipal elections in Nagaland were held way back in 2004, with the terms of the civic bodies ending in 2009-10.

However, the road ahead has its challenges. The influential Eastern Naga People’s Organisation (ENPO) has already declared a boycott of the June 26 civic polls, urging the people of the six eastern Nagaland districts to abstain from voting. Undeterred, the state authorities, including the Governor, the state government, and the State Election Commission, have issued impassioned appeals to the ENPO and the residents of eastern Nagaland, urging them to participate in the upcoming elections.
