Imphal, April 7: The Manipur police on Thursday seized around three kilogram of gold, suspected to be smuggled from Myanmar, valued at around Rs. 1.50 crore and arrested one person, officials said.
Acting on reliable information, Manipur police intercepted a car at Pallel check post in Kakching district and recovered the 18 bars of gold weighing 2.988 kilogram and arrested the driver of the vehicle Prakash Kshetri, 23.
The entire operation was led by Kakching district Superintendent of Police and additional Superintendent of Police Binoy Chongtham.
After the necessary formalities, the seized gold and the arrested person was handed over to the Customs Department for further necessary action.
Appreciating the police efforts, Manipur Chief Minster N. Biren Singh tweeted: “Gold smuggler busted with large amount of gold! As we intensify the crackdown against the smugglers, the Kakching Police has apprehended one Prakash Kshetri (23) a resident of Moreh, Ward No 8 along with 18 bars of gold weighing 2.9 kgs during frisking at Pallel check-post today.”

Police officials said the gold might have been smuggled from Mynamar through Moreh town, a rapidly developing trade point in India on the border with Myanmar, with the city of Tamu on the other side of the border.
The India-Myanmar Friendship Bridge in Moreh connects India to Kalewa in Myanmar’s Sagaing Division.
Varied harmful drugs, especially heroin, highly-addictive methamphetamine tablets, also commonly known as ‘Yaba’ or ‘party tablets’, poppy seeds, opium, ganja (marijuana), morphine, bottles of cough syrup and various other contraband items as well as arms and ammunition are often smuggled from Myanmar, which shares a 1,643 km of unfenced border with the states of Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Nagaland.
The Assam Rifles, which guard the India-Myanmar borders, recently deployed additional troopers and stepped up their vigil along these sensitive frontiers.
