Need collective and transformative action towards protecting and conserving environment: Rakkam Sangma

Baghmara, June 6: Together with the rest of the country, the Department of Forest and Environment, Social Forestry and Territorial Division, South Garo Hills and the District Administration and Basin Management Authority, South Garo Hills jointly organised the World Environment Day on Monday on theme “Only one Earth” at Government Higher Secondary School Baghmara.

The Chairman Meghalaya Health Advisory Board and MLA Rongara Siju Constituency, Rakkam A Sangma, was the chief guest on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Sangma lauded the organizers for the vibrant celebration of the day with various programs and activities such as drawing competition, slogan writing competition and essay competition. While congratulating the winners, he encouraged the younger folks to actively take part in such competition and programs as it is the source of knowledge and learning.

He also reiterated the need to understand the call for collective and transformative action towards protecting and conserving our environment and said that “we should remind ourselves to safeguard our environment for our future generation as our environment is being destructed by our innumerable and unthinkable activities… so let us pledge ourselves to make our environment a better place by planting more trees and by minimizing our age old practice of jhum cultivation.”

To mark the day plantation of trees, World Environment Day rally etc were also held.
