Shillong, Oct 24: In an exciting botanical breakthrough, a new species of Begonia has been discovered in the remote Dibang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh. This new species is a testament to the rich, untapped biodiversity of the region, which continues to yield fascinating plant life.
The discovery was spearheaded by a team of researchers, including Dr. Nazir Ahmad Bhat from the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), Mr. Bipankar Hajong, a Ph.D. scholar at CSIR-NEIST, and Dr. Pankaj Bharali, Senior Scientist at CSIR-NEIST.
Begonia neisti is a visually striking species. According to Dr. Bhat, the plant stands out due to its variegated leaves adorned with white-silver circular spots and dark brownish-red patches near the veins. The large leaves and the distinctive white stripe along the stems and petioles give the plant an unusual appearance, setting it apart from other Begonia species. Found on the moist hilly slopes along the roads between Hunli and Anini, the plant blooms from November to January, adding a seasonal vibrancy to the landscape.
To confirm the species’ identity, advanced genetic analysis using the ITS2 marker was conducted. The findings revealed that Begonia neisti is closely related to other Begonias in the Platycentrum section, particularly those found in the Indian subcontinent. The research, published in the prestigious Nordic Journal of Botany, adds a critical layer to our understanding of the genus’ evolution and ecology.
Despite the excitement around its discovery, Begonia neisti has been classified as Data Deficient (DD) by the IUCN Red List due to the limited information available. The species’ habitat is under threat from ongoing road expansion, raising concerns about its future. Researchers are calling for immediate conservation efforts to protect this delicate gem from disappearing before its potential is fully understood.
The discovery not only enriches scientific knowledge but also underscores the importance of continued exploration in regions like Arunachal Pradesh, where hidden natural treasures await discovery.
