Jowai, Nov 11: It what may be termed as a moment that will remain in the history for generations to come, the villagers of Mulieh Village of West JaiƱtia Hills on Wednesday evening welcomed their hero Trinity Saioo, a school teacher and a farmer who received the Padma Shri Award 2020 for Agriculture on 8th November from the President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
Trinity Saioo was awarded for her initiative in mobilising about 800 farmers from around LaskeiƱ C&RD Block to set up Self Help Groups for growing the Lakadong Turmeric which is world famous today.
The Dorbar Chnong Mulieh organised a grand welcome ceremony for the Padma Shri awardee at Madan Skur Wah Chnong, Mulieh where the MLA of Raliang, Comingone Ymbon, witnessed the function as Chief Guest in the presence of the BDO, Laskein C&TD Block, Dr. Brightstar Langbang, as the Guest of Honour, Project Officer of Lakadong Mission, Demanson Lyngdoh, amongst others.
The welcoming ceremony was presided by the Waheh Chnong of Mulieh, Roilakson Suchiang, and it was attended by the villagers both young and old who cheered upon the arrival of their local hero.
Brightstar Langbang while delivering a speech at the function said that this is a proud moment not only for the people of Mulieh Village or the Laskein C&RD Block but JaiƱtia Hills and the State as a whole and Trinity Saioo is an inspiration for others to strive and to be committed to their works.
While addressing the gathering Trinity Saioo, who is a school teacher by profession, urged upon the MLA to provide assistance to St. Margret RCLP School Mulieh – the school in which she teaches, because the school building needs immediate renovation and also urged upon the farmers from her village to preserve the variety of Lakadong Turmeric grown in the Mulieh Village.
She also thanked everyone who have been with her and guided her all along especially KN Kumar, Chairman Meghalaya Farmers Empowerment Commission, and the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, who have supported her and the farmers of the state.
Comingone Ymbon stated that this is a moment that will remain in history for the people of JaiƱtia Hills and further urged Trinity to continue on with her work because with her guidance the farming community from the area have benefitted a lot especially when it comes to growing the Lakadong Turmeric.
He also advised the farmers to work together for a better and profitable future by citing an example that a person would ask for 20 tonnes of turmeric but each family cannot produce such amount thus working together will help in meeting the demands and also reduce the price differences of the turmeric that they produce.
During the function Trinity was also felicitated by the Dorbar Chnong, the teachers of St. Margret RCLP School, SHGs and Manbha VO.
