Shillong, Aug 10: Anup Chetia, the general secretary of the Pro-talk faction of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), announced on Wednesday that discussions aimed at achieving peace between the ULFA and representatives from the Government of India and the Government of Assam will take place in New Delhi after August 15.

Chetia revealed, “Last time, we met the delegation from the Government of India and Government of Assam. After Independence Day celebrations, we hope our discussions will be held in New Delhi with the Government of India and Government of Assam representatives.”

The ULFA leader shared this information during his presence at the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples event organized by the North East Indigenous Peoples’ Forum (NEIPF) at the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong. Chetia, who also serves as the convener of the NEIPF, expressed his optimism that the peace dialogues will reach a conclusion before the year 2024.

Chetia conveyed, “Before the elections, we hope to arrive at a solution with the Government of India.” He underlined that the Government of India is actively seeking an agreement with the ULFA’s pro-talk faction.

He further elaborated, “The Government of India also realizes that if they sign the agreement with us, then the problems in Assam will find resolution…”

Responding to queries about the potential inclusion of ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah in the peace process, Chetia stated, “We have contact with him…but that depends upon the Government of India. If the Government of India is interested in engaging with him and his party, then it’s a possibility. However, there is a lack of communication with the Government of India, and their demands remain unchanged. The Government of India cannot accept their demands.”

Chetia highlighted that the participation of other groups in the negotiation process would prove beneficial for the people and the state of Assam.

Regarding Baruah’s whereabouts, Chetia clarified, “He is somewhere; we don’t have specific information, but our discussions are ongoing.”
