Post-poll Violence: Nigh Curfew imposed in Eastern West Khasi Hills district

Shillong, March 3: Eastern West Khasi Hills district administration has promulgated a night curfew from Friday following the post counting violent incident.

The night curfew will be in effect from 6pm to 6am until further orders to ensure peace and security of the general public and safeguarding public properties.

In his order, District Magistrate W Nongsiej has also prohibited the assembly of more than five persons during the said period in all the government office complexes located at Mawsawa locality, Sangshong village, Umwiehsup locality and Mairang Mission village.

The order said that the March 2 violence and arson was committed by an unlawful and unruly mob by torching five government vehicles and one private vehicle and pelting of stones and damaging the office building of the Deputy Commissioner, thereby violating the order of February 1, 2023 under section 144 CrPC which still remains in force till March 4.

“It has been made to appear to me that the said violence and arson was carried out by members of certain organized groups and associations to achieve their objectives. It is apprehended that such groups and associations might still continue carrying out such unlawful assembly and acts of violence and arson to further their interest,” it added.

Section 144 CrPC clamped in Sohra

Meanwhile, the SDO of Sohra has also prohibited assembly of five persons, carrying of weapons or items which can be used as a weapon, parking of vehicles along the stretch leading towards the Sub Divisional Court, Sohra and Sub Divisional Office, Sohra to prevent any untoward incidents in the area.

The order came after there was a fake news spreading on Youtube channels relating to the announcement of results in the general election 2023 pertaining to Shella and Sohra constituency which contradicted the result announced by the returning officer of Shella and Sohra constituency.
