Shillong, Nov 23: Five pressure groups on Wednesday decided to hold a sit-in-demonstration on Thursday and a statewide Non-Cooperation Movement (NCM) on November 25, to pressurize the state government to take stern action into the killing of five persons by Assam police at Mukroh village in West Jaintia Hills District.
The decision was taken at a meeting attended by leaders of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) and Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU).
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, FKJGP president Dundee C Khongsit said, “We have decided to take up various peaceful protests to condemn the killing of five civilians by the Assam police.”
He said a sit-in-demonstration will be held infront of U Kiang Nangbah statue near Shillong civil Hospital on Thursday. This will be followed by a candle light vigil to express solidarity with the bereaved family members of the victims killed in the firing incident.
“We strongly demand the state government to ensure justice is given to the victims,” Khongsit said.
The FKJGP president further appealed to all government employees to take part in the non-cooperation movement to be held across the state on November 25.
“This is to send a clear message that it is high time for the state government to take the Mukroh incident seriously as this is not the first time that the people of the state who reside in border areas face harassment from the Assam police,” he said.
“We have seen a similar incident in 2010 in Langpih and till date the victims have not receive justice hence we demand from Meghalaya government to aggressively take up the Mukroh incident with the central government and ask the Assam government hand over the culprit involved in the killing of five civilians” he added.
