SHILLONG, April 28: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Friday chaired a meeting of the Broad Spectrum Forum 2023 on Public Works Department (Roads/Buildings) attended by the officers and engineers of the department.

Speaking to reporters, Tynsong informed that several issues related to the PWD Roads and PWD Buildings were discussed during the meeting.

“We also took up issues related to shortage of manpower, problems due to insufficient funds and challenges of availability of land for implementation of various projects,” he said.

The deputy chief minister said the issue regarding the implementation of the PMGSY and other centrally sponsored schemes was also discussed.

“The officers and engineers have given important suggestions for the government to take necessary action in order to improve the road connectivity for the interest of the people and the state,” he added.

With regards to the alleged sub-standard works by some of the contractors which resulted in quick wear and tear of the roads in the different parts of the state, Tynsong said that the meeting had discussed at length on the issue of quality control.

“We have decided to come up with stringent laws to keep a check on this and ensure that contractors complete the work within the stipulated timeline,” he said.

Regarding the problem of traffic congestion, the deputy chief minister said the government will try to come up with adequate line roads in Shillong, Jowai and Tura. “We are working on this but the problem is due to non-availability of land. We have to find out ways and means to ensure land is made available for implementing important projects to ease traffic congestion,” he added.
