Purakhasia residents protest power outages, demand action from MeECL

Must read

Tura, July 31: Annoyed at frequent power cuts as well as prolonged power outages, around 150 residents, primarily senior citizens, teachers, and local inhabitants from the Purakhasia area protested at the office of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MECL) in Dalu, West Garo Hills on Wednesday.

They met with the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Balsrang Marak and the Project Manager of SAI Computer Limited to voice their grievances.

The residents raised several complaints about the erratic electricity supply in their region, including:
– Prolonged power outages lasting more than 20 days at a time.
– Frequent power cuts following even brief periods of rain.
– Discrepancies in power availability between Dalu and Purakhasia, with Purakhasia often experiencing cuts while Dalu remains powered.
– Deteriorating and potentially hazardous condition of many electricity poles.

Addressing the aggrieved public, MeECL SDO Balsrang Marak assured that the issues would be resolved within a week. He emphasized that the operationalization of the Dalu Substation would significantly mitigate these problems.

Technically, MECL is responsible for maintaining the 33kV power lines in the area. However, the 11kV and 440kV power lines, as well as the distribution and revenue collection, are managed by SAI Computer Limited, a company based in Meerut.
