Shillong, Jan 27: Congress working president Pynshngain N Syiem on Friday expressed confidence to win from Pynthorumkhrah constituency in the upcoming assembly elections, slated to be held on February 27.
According to him, the decision of many candidates to contest from the constituency is a “game of someone else” but people are wiser.
Syiem, who is also opposition leader in the KHADC, also welcomed the joining of former NCP candidate Freddy Rumnong and former general secretary of BJP Pynthorumkhrah mandal P Lyngdoh along with 50 others to the party at a meeting held at Congress Bhavan here.
“Their joining will no doubt have a great impact for the Congress to win the coming elections from Pynthorumkhrah,” he said.
Claiming that he has a close relationship with the people of the villages which are not under his Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah MDC constituency, Syiem said, “I have no problem to win in this coming elections.”
“In fact, there is not much difference (between MDC and MLA elections). As of now, there are already 7 villages in Pynthorumkhrah constituency which are already with Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah constituency and the other two with Mawlai and Laitumkhrah constituency, respectively. I have no problem to convince the other villages to support me…I don’t have any problem to address the problems faced by other villages within the Pynthorumkhrah constituency,” he added.
Syiem said that Pynthorumkhrah has a mixed population and it is more or less like his former constituency – Mawsynram, where people from other communities are residing.
When asked, the sitting MDC said that he has already proved that despite being a former MLA from a rural constituency he had won the MDC elections from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah. He added that if he can win the MDC elections by preparing only 40 days, he will also win the coming elections which he has been preparing for the last three and a half years.
He, however, said that every fight is difficult and no one can take it lightly while reminding that DD Lapang also lost the election when he was chief minister of the state.
“I have no problem fighting with anyone but I should be sincere and serious. I need the love and confidence of the people from all communities. Hek may have many alliances, I also have many alliances, we can fight,” he said.
Syiem further claimed that he knows the art of politics and said, “You will see both communities will support me and that will be proved only on March 2.”
Questioning the presence of too many candidates from the constituency, the Congress leader said, “They (candidates) have come up like mushrooms in Pynthorumkhrah. I don’t know what their intention is but people will know better as they are more smarter than the candidates.”
“The coming out (of many candidates) to contest the elections within a matter of a few days especially for MLA elections… is a game of someone else but people are wiser. Many are contesting to lose the elections as only 2-3 are contesting to win and people will also go to those who have the chance to win,” he further added.
