Silchar, July 8: Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev has announced a hunger strike in Silchar on Monday, protesting against the delimitation draft proposed by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The hunger strike, which will last for 10 hours, is set to commence at 9 am, with Sushmita Dev being joined by fellow members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Dev expressed her desire for Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, to address the concerns of the people in the Barak Valley and correspondingly write to the Election Commission regarding the issue.

“He is not the chief minister of just one political party or a specific region. The people of Barak Valley also voted him into this position, and it is his responsibility to listen to the voices of the common people residing in Barak Valley,” she stated.

Sushmita Dev’s hunger strike is intended to draw attention to the grievances of the people in Silchar and surrounding areas regarding the Delimitation draft proposed by the Election Commission.

Also commenting on ECI’s for refusal to meet a delegation of 11 political parties earlier this year, Dev said that it was ECI’s duty to spare 5 minutes for these leaders which consisted of MPs and MLAs.

She further stressed that the ECI conducted the process of delimitation without consulting the stakeholders and in an undemocratic manner.
