Shillong, Feb 17: Superintendent of Police (SP) (Traffic) Shailendra Bamaniya on Thursday listed out issues that are contributing to the traffic congestion in Shillong, with the daily addition of new vehicles being the foremost factor.
He said the vehicle density is very high in Shillong city with an average of 50-100 vehicles being added to roads in the city, where the roads have gotten any bigger for over 20 years.
“The city is a tourist hub which has many tourists coming to the city. Roads are very narrow,” he said.
In addition, the traffic department is also shorthanded. He said that they have several traffic points and currently Shillong Traffic Police (STP) is deploying over 150 traffic personnel across the city.
Stating that they are not fully equipped to control the traffic since there are limitations for them, he added that the city also lacks proper embarkment and dis-embarkment points. “These points are lacking that needs to be constructed. Hawkers issue is already in Court but the hawkers are occupying most of the areas in the town,” said Bamaniya.
