Republic Day Tableau: Manipur’s women-led ‘Mother’s Market’ takes center stage

Imphal, Jan 26: Manipur’s tableau at the 75th Republic Day parade highlighted the renowned Ima Keithel, also known as the Mother’s Market. This 500-year-old market, exclusively operated by women, stands as a unique testament to Nari Shakti, showcasing the strength and empowerment of women.

Aligned with the theme “Thambal Gi Langla – Lotus Threads,” Manipur’s Republic Day tableau depicted women skillfully extracting delicate fibers from lotus stems and crafting yarn with traditional spinning wheels. At the centerpiece, the float showcased a woman adeptly weaving clothes using Eyong, a traditional Manipuri loom. The tableau beautifully captured the artistry and cultural heritage of Manipuri women.

A replica of the Ima Keithel building adorned the rear end of Manipur’s Republic Day tableau, symbolizing the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. Ima Keithel, renowned for its contributions, has introduced the world to internationally acclaimed products like Leirum, Moirang Phi, and Mayek-Naibi, as highlighted in an information brochure released by the government on the eve of Republic Day.

Manipur’s Republic Day tableau highlighted Kumari Bijiyasanti Tongbram of Thanga village, the first lotus silk producer in India. Her efforts have not only empowered local women through employment but have also positioned India as the fourth nation globally to export lotus silk. Recognizing her achievements, she was honored with the prestigious ‘Changemaker of the Northeast 2020’ award, as stated in the government’s Republic Day brochure.

The flourishing Ima Keithel and the inspirational journey of Bijiyasanti, turning local lotus stalks into export-quality lotus threads while empowering women, symbolise the essence of ‘Vocal for Local, Local for Global,’ stated the government.
