Shillong, Feb 14: At least 450 private cars will be taken off the roads once the school buses are rolled out in the city. This was as per reports submitted by the state before the Meghalaya High Court on Tuesday.
Pursuant to the last order of February 7, the State reported that the immediate measure that could be implemented is to roll out school buses.
The State expects that at least 450 private cars will be taken off the roads in the event the school buses are appropriately used.
According to the State, such measures will be implemented immediately and results should show by the end of the month.
In its order passed after hearing a PIL, the Court said it is a positive step taken by the State and even if 250 to 300 cars are removed from the Shillong roads, that would ease the traffic congestion to a great extent.
It is hoped that the school buses would start plying immediately upon the schools’ reopening and parents and guardians would be encouraged to allow their wards to use the buses once security measures in such buses are put in place by the State, it said.
The Court said the State should appoint personnel to monitor the extent of ease in congestion as a result of the proposed measure. Other measures as indicated in the report filed on the last occasion should be taken as per the specific timelines.
The next hearing on the matter will be held on March 14.
