Rs. 3 cr sanctioned to develop Umjyrsieh Football Ground

Shillong, May 9: With the objective to promote sports, Rs. 3 crore has been sanctioned by the State Government to develop the football ground at Madan Iing Syiem, Mylliem in Umjyrsieh Ground, Madan Iing Syiem, Mylliem, East Khasi Hills District.

Sports & Youth Affairs Minister, Banteidor Lyngdoh, in the presence of C&RD Minister and local MLA Hamletson Dohling on Saturday (May 7, 2022) laid the foundation stone for the same at a programme held in Umjyrsieh Ground, Madan Iing Syiem, Mylliem.

It may be mentioned that the “Development of Football Ground”, apart from the improvement of the present ground, also includes the construction of a sitting gallery, drainage, fencing and a footpath. The project is sanctioned at an amount of Rs 3 crores and the scheduled time of completion is 24 months.

Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Lyngdoh lauded the efforts of the local MLA in bringing numerous sporting schemes to the constituency. The hard work of the MLA is the realisation of such projects being implemented across the constituency, he said. Praising the Umjyrsieh ground, he stated that the present ground is one of the best natural turf for playing football; such initiatives are a must to protect such grounds in the state, he added.

He hoped that with the completion of the project, Umjyrsieh Football Ground will be a prime venue for hosting big and prominent tournaments in the state.

Dohling during his address thanked the Sports Department especially the Minister for his contribution in providing schemes to the constituency. He said that it is a joyous moment to be able to unveil the foundation stone on Saturday along with the Sports Minister himself. This is proof that the Sports Minister is committed to the overall development of sports and games in the entire state, he added.

“Youth being the majority of the population in the state, we need to provide good sports infrastructure so as to deter the youth from going in the wrong path and also to promote their talents in order to produce national and international athletes,” he said. He also informed the gathering that in the last 4 years as an MLA, he was able to provide schemes relating to sports to the tune of Rs 19.74 crores.

Others who spoke during the programme include Bibatdor M Syiem, Chief Engineer, State Sports Council, Hamphel Khyriem, Headman Madan Iing Syiem, Mylliem among others.

The day also witnessed performances by young local artists with the highlight being the performance by Jessie Lyngdoh and troops.
