Shillong, Feb 16: Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Wednesday rubbished reports alleging that there is a strong lobby for appointment of Assam’s Special Director General of Police, Lajja Ram Bishnoi, as the new Meghalaya DGP.

“That (allegation) is a mere speculation because we from the state government have not taken any decision yet. The appointment of the new DGP will take some time,” the home minister told reporters.

He informed that the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had recommended three names for the appointment of the new DGP and the process is on for taking a final decision on the matter. “We will choose the best from among the three names,” he said.

The names shortlisted by the UPSC are Mukesh Agrawal, KV Singh Deo (both 1989 batch) and L. Ram Bishnoi (1991 batch).

Out of the five names sent by the state government earlier after the retirement of R Chandranathan on December 21, 2021, the UPSC selected three following the guidelines of the Supreme Court.

The other two are S. Narayan Singh (1991 batch) and Idashisha Nongrang (1992 batch). Nongrang is functioning as the officiating DGP.

Rymbui further stated that the state government will take into consideration the prevailing situation and the unique nature of the state of Meghalaya while deciding on the appointment of the new police chief.

If the meeting of the State Security Commission would soon be convened, he said, “All formalities will be done for appointment of the DGP.”
