Shillong, July 2: Opposition Chief Whip and legislator from Mawlai, PT Sawkmie has written to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) and the East Khasi Hills (EKH) Superintendent of Police to ensure that trucks from other districts do not dump their garbage at the Marten dumping ground in Mawlai Mawiong here.
This came after garbage collected from Jowai, the district headquarter of West Jaintia Hills, was allegedly dumped at Marten.
In his letter on Friday, he questioned how the garbage trucks from other districts are allowed to come to the state capital when inter-district movement is restricted by the government due to the ongoing second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a public representative of Mawlai constituency, he said he is completely opposed to the idea of burdening the Marten.
“I request you to stop the wastes from other districts to be dumped at Mawlai Marten for the overall interest,” the MLA said in his letter to the SMB CEO.
He also requested the board to come up with a clarification with regard to the bio-medical wastes raised by the youth organizations from Mawlai which is a concern in terms of health condition and environment.
Meanwhile, the MLA also asked the SP to instruct the police personnel on duty to stop and send back all such garbage vehicles to their respective districts.
