Shillong, Dec 6: In a high-stakes meeting to address rising concerns over drug trafficking, illegal migration, and increasing theft in Meghalaya, South Shillong legislator Sanbor Shullai has called for urgent and uncompromising measures. Speaking to stakeholders from South Shillong, he stressed that all entry and exit points should be sealed and every vehicle should be checked.
Shullai highlighted the need for stricter enforcement at checkpoints and criticized lapses in vigilance, even pointing out the involvement of law enforcement and military personnel in drug trafficking. “When those meant to enforce the law are complicit, trust erodes. Sincerity and accountability are the need of the hour,” he emphasized.
The MLA demanded thorough checks at key entry points in Meghalaya, such as Byrnihat and Jaintia Hills, to block drug routes originating from neighbouring states and countries like Myanmar and Bangladesh. “Even VIP vehicles must not be spared. This is a fight for the future of our youth,” he recommended.
Community Patrols and Safety Concerns
Rising thefts and attacks on places of worship, including churches, were also addressed. Shullai urged local residents and youth organizations to collaborate with the police for intensified night patrols. He recounted the effectiveness of similar measures 15 years ago, which drastically reduced crime in Shillong.
“The theft of valuable items from churches in Laban and surrounding areas shows the audacity of criminals. They don’t even spare the house of God. Community night patrols, combined with police support, can deter such acts,” he said.
Meanwhile, Shullai also called attention to the dire need for affordable rehabilitation centers for drug addicts. Criticizing the lack of such facilities in Meghalaya, he pledged to push for central funding for government-run rehabilitation centers in every district.
“Drug addiction ruins lives, and private rehab centers are unaffordable for most. We must ensure government facilities are accessible to all. We’ll press the central government for funds under social welfare schemes,” he assured.
Shullai also promised to present the meeting’s resolutions to the Chief Minister, Home Minister, and Social Welfare Minister, and push for immediate action. “The government is trying, but the current measures are insufficient. We need a unified and serious approach to protect Meghalaya’s future,” he asserted.
